making a few decoys in woodshop

never gone duck hunting, but i got bit by the bug bad AFTER the season ended! went out calling my first time by myself to a swamp(beaver pond) by my house and called in a beautiful drake and hen wood duck! got me hooked! i go to south kitsap high school, and being a student i dont got much in the way of cash so i thought id make a few decoys to use next season from free wood and save some dough!!! i just started making a head but stopped because i dont have a very good reference for size, been looking online for sizes and got good info on overall lengths of the decoys & width but for certain species like canvasback or widgeon i need to know how long it is from tip of the beak to the back of the head, also the thickness of the body ( height of stomach to top of back) trying to be acurate, if you had a mounted bird and measured it for me that would be about as good as it gets! any species would be helpful as id like to make one of each someday! hope everything makes sense!all help very much apprreciated!

Hey, maybe somebody in  your area cold give you an older deke you could mimic with your project?  Anyone out there from the Kitsap area?

If you are serious about carving, get yourself a duck pattern book.  They often have top and side silhouettes that can be traced then band-sawed to get your rough shape.

Canvasback drake - 5 5/8" tip of beak to head/neck junction, 2" high head, beak is 2 3/4" tip to forehead.

hey i got something for ya. i have two vandykes duck carving kits. they are older but unused in the box as they came. they are roughly shaped. one is probably widgeon size maybe small mallard.. the other is large teal or small wood duck size. the heads are unattached.  You can have them if you like. i got them at a garage sale for a buck. I live in kitsap and went to SK.  I may even throw in a call or two maybe you could use the reeds and spin a new call bodies on the wood lathe. send me a pm.

Here is the premier duck hunting forum which I found years ago that covers the nation and a few other countries.   I provided the link to the forum on decoys.  PLEASE tell them you are making a high school project and your age.  They can be butt heads at times.  Once they know your age and high school project they will give you whatever you need.

Pretty easy to find patterns online also. A duck pattern will often work for severall types of ducks. Pm an email and I can send a few your way.

Might try doing some foam decoys first, a lot easier medium to work with.
